11 Day African Jungle Tour

Tour Itinerary of the 11-day African Jungle Tour

Day 1: Arrival in Entebbe 

Upon arrival at the Entebbe Airport, you will be met by your driver guide and transferred to your place of overnight.  Accommodation at Papyrus Guest House.

Day 2: Kampala – Kibale Forest National Park

Pick up from Kampala by your private African Jungle Tour driver guide and head west to Fort Portal. Kibale Forest is reputed for its 13 primate species and along the way, look out for baboons and black-and-white colobus monkeys. Accommodation and Meals at Turaco Treetops.

Day 3: Chimp Trekking & Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary / Community Visit 

On this African Jungle Tour day, the forest opens its doors for sensational chimp tracking. Enjoy a guided nature walk in the tropical rainforest in search of the wild chimpanzee, red-tailed monkey, and black-and-white.

After lunch, we transfer to Bigodi Village for a guided community walk. Accompanied by a guide who can tell you everything about the traditional customs and lifestyle of the inhabitants. Visit a primary school, Catholic Church, and traditional homesteads, learn about the crops, and listen to the storytelling of a Mzee (elderly man). 

Alternatively – Have a guided bird-watching expedition in the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary. 

The sanctuary is home to about 200 species of birds including the crested crane and elusive Great Blue Turaco.  Look out for 8 primate species in the sanctuary which include baboons, blue monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabeys, L’Hoest monkeys, red colobus monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, chimpanzees, vervet monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys.

Day 4: Top of the world hike and Mahoma falls 

After breakfast, you will embark on a 3-hour nature trail passing through traditional homesteads, tea, banana, and coffee plantations. Get to interact with the local community as they go about their daily activities getting immersed in their culture. 

Once you get to the summit, you will take in views of the crater lakes, Fortportal town, Kibale forest, and the Majestic Rwenzori Mountain as well. 

After lunch, take an African Jungle Tour hike at Lake Nkuruba to encounter different species of primates and birds, and visit the Mahoma Falls.  Mahoma Falls is rewarded with refreshing views of the waterfalls stumbling over the rocks with a gush, a lush green environment, an impressive birdlife, beautiful rocks, and a serene, peaceful, and cool atmosphere.

Day 5: Fortportal  – Semliki National Park- Hotsprings

Today you will proceed to Semliki National Park on a 2.5 hrs drive.  This park also holds a good number of attractions including the famous hot springs, and plenty of wildlife such as the Uganda kobs, warthogs, waterbucks, and several primates including the chimps, L’ hosts, black and white Colobus monkeys, and so on.  

You will head for the nature walk to the hot springs along an 8 km trail.  The Sempaya Hot Springs includes the male hotspring along a 1-hour trail and the female 30-minute trail surrounded by forest and palm trees.   

The male spring is a forceful eruption that shoots boiling water several meters into the air, creating a dramatic spectacle.  It is here that a demonstration of boiling eggs or bananas takes place.  The female spring is calmer and more tranquil, with a gentle flow of hot water that appears to be almost serene.

Day 6: Fort Portal – Ishasha Sector Queen Elizabeth Park. 

After breakfast, head out for a 4-5 hrs drive to Ishasha Sector the southern part of Queen Elizabeth National Park and famed for its tree-climbing lions.  Arrive in time for lunch and thereafter have a game safari in search of the lions.

Day 7: Tree Climbing Lions and Ishasha Sundowner 

Early morning bush breakfast along River Ntungwe and then head out to search for the tree-climbing lions once again and a visit to the Kameme Village. Guests have a chance to interact with the local community and experience the way of making local brewing from millet and bananas (“bushera”). 

You will visit the local vegetable market of Kameme and learn more about their way of living.  Head back to lunch and later in the evening, you will have a sundowner looking out for the sun setting over the sprawling savannah as you relax with some drinks and snacks.  Accommodation and Meals at Ishasha Jungle Lodge. 

Day 8: Ishasha – Bwindi Forest – Rushaga Sector. 

After breakfast, sent off for Bwindi Impenetrable National Park arriving in time for relaxation and lunch. Spend the evening relaxing in preparation for your gorilla trekking expedition.  Accommodation and Meals at Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge.

Day 9: Gorilla Trekking

Arise early today and prepare for the highlight of your safari, an unforgettable encounter with the gentle giants of Bwindi!  Following breakfast, transfer to the national park offices where you will be allocated a gorilla family in groups of 8 as well as a gorilla tracking guide.

After a pre-tracking briefing by a ranger guide about the appropriate safety precautions, you will drive to the trailhead for the start of a thrilling adventure.  

Participants can expect to walk long distances in steep and sometimes muddy conditions with rain overhead, however, the thrill of coming face to face with a giant Mountain Gorilla silverback is worthwhile. The trekking time is unpredictable and may take between 2 to 8 hrs or longer.

You will have a packed lunch from the lodge for this hike. 

Upon sighting the gorillas, you spend the allowed one hour with them as they go about their daily life; feeding, playing, and grooming before heading back to the trailhead. Accommodation and Meals at Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge.

Day 10: Bwindi Park – Igongo Cultural Center 

Today you will proceed back to Kampala on an 8-hour drive for a stopover at Igongo Cultural Center arriving in time for late lunch or you will have a packed lunch. This day will be spent relaxing at the cultural village and taking a tour of the cultural museum depicting Ankole Cultural Heritage and Nkwanzi craft center.  Accommodation and Meals at Igongo Country Hotel. 

Day 11: Mbarara  –  Kampala/ Entebbe Airport

After breakfast, head back to Kampala arriving in the afternoon for refreshment at the hotel, or head to the airport for your onward flight back home.
