Maasai Mara National Reserve – Wildlife and the Great Migration

The Maasai Mara is one of Kenya's most famous safari destinations and is known for its open grasslands and excellent wildlife viewing.

It is particularly well known for the annual wildebeest migration, when large herds move through the Mara ecosystem. Even outside the migration period, the reserve offers opportunities to see lions, elephants, leopards, buffaloes, cheetahs and many other species.

Amboseli National Park – Elephants and Mount Kilimanjaro

Amboseli is known for its large elephant population and its views towards Mount Kilimanjaro across the border in Tanzania.

Tsavo National Parks – Wide Open Wilderness

Samburu National Reserve – Northern Kenya's Unique Wildlife

Samburu offers a very different safari experience from the Maasai Mara and southern Kenya.

The reserve is known for species adapted to the drier northern landscape, including Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, Somali ostrich and Beisa oryx. When to Visit Kenya

Kenya can be visited throughout the year, although the best time depends on what you want to see and where you plan to travel.

June to October

These are generally drier months and are popular for wildlife viewing. The Maasai Mara is also a key destination during the annual wildebeest migration, although the timing of the migration varies from year to year.

January to March

These months are generally drier and can offer good conditions for wildlife viewing. They can be a good choice for travellers looking for a safari outside the main migration period.

November to December

The short rains bring greener landscapes and can offer good safari conditions between periods of rain. Visitor numbers may also be lower than during the main peak periods.

March to May

The long rains can bring heavier rainfall, particularly in April and May. Some roads and tracks can become muddy, but the countryside is green and some lodges offer lower-season rates.
