Day 1: Arrive in Kigali – Volcanoes National Park

Upon arrival in Kigali, Rwanda, the company representative will welcome you to embark on your 3 Day Rwanda Gorilla Trekking Safari. If time allows, you will visit Kimironko market and experience the colorful handmade arts and crafts market at Caplaki Craft Village.

After lunch, transfer to Volcanoes National Park amidst the forested slopes of the Virungas forming a dramatic setting for the most poignant and memorable wildlife experience of a lifetime: gorilla trekking.

Situated in the far northwest of Rwanda, Volcanoes National Park protects the steep slopes of this magnificent mountain range – home of the endangered mountain gorilla and a rich mosaic of montane ecosystems, which embrace evergreen and bamboo forest, open grassland, swamp and heath.

Day 2: Rwanda Gorilla Trekking Safari

After enjoying a hearty breakfast at your lodge, your day begins with a journey to Volcanoes National Park (Parc National des Volcans) Headquarters. Here, you’ll meet your experienced gorilla trekking ranger guides and fellow adventurers.

During the informative briefing session, you’ll be grouped with a maximum of 8 trekkers and assigned to a specific gorilla family for your trekking experience.

The trek itself can vary in duration from 4 to 8 hours, depending on the location of the gorillas in the mist-shrouded forest. You’ll traverse diverse landscapes, from open fields and terraced slopes to dense bamboo forests and thick undergrowth that mark the park’s boundaries.

Once you locate the gorilla family, you’ll have an unforgettable hour to observe them in their natural habitat. This limited time ensures minimal disturbance and supports ongoing conservation efforts.

All permits are booked on a first come first serve basis through the Rwanda Development Board or a Tour agency. Volcanoes National Park has 10 gorilla groups and each group accommodates only 8 people per day for only 1 hour viewing session. The age limit for trekking gorillas is 15 years.
