To obtain a gorilla permit in Uganda, you need to book it in advance through a reliable tour operator. The permits are booked on a first come first serve basis through the Uganda Wildlife Authority.
Gorilla trekking takes part in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. The age limit for the gorilla trekking is 15 years old.

Uganda is home to two main gorilla trekking destinations: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Both parks offer unique gorilla trekking experiences, each with its charm and appeal.

As soon as you decide on your travel dates, ensure you begin the process of booking a permit which will give you access to the preferred park for gorilla trekking.
Gorilla permits are in high demand and are issued on a limited basis to minimize the impact on the gorillas’ natural habitat. It’s essential to book your gorilla permit well in advance to secure your preferred trekking date.
Permits can be obtained through the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) or authorized tour operators. Keep in mind that permits are non-transferable and must be booked for a specific date and park.
It is recommended to book your permit five months in advance especially if you intend to travel during the peak seasons of June, July, August, September, December January, and February. These are very busy seasons and permits are limited as they sell out quickly.
How much is the gorilla permit in Uganda?
Once you’ve selected your trekking date and confirmed your gorilla safari experience, payment needs to be made through the Uganda Wildlife Authority or your chosen tour operator.
Effective April 2024, below are the new charges
Gorilla Trekking Experience
Foreign Non-Residents USD 800 per person
Foreign Residents with working permits of USD 700 per person
Rest of Africa USD 500 per person
Residents UGX 300 000 per person
The gorilla habituation experience fees with 4 hours spent with the gorillas
Foreign Non-Residents USD 1500 per person
Foreign Residents with working permits USD 1000 per person
Rest of Africa USD 1000 per person
Residents UGX 750 000 per person
The above fees are inclusive of the guide, park entrance fees, and community development contribution.
What is needed to book the gorilla permit in Uganda?
When reserving a gorilla permit, please provide the following information:
- Preferred dates for gorilla tracking (it’s advisable to provide multiple options due to limited availability)
- Full names
- Nationality
- Passport numbers
Your gorilla tracking permit will be issued with a unique serial number, incorporating the aforementioned personal details. This permit must be presented at the park headquarters after the pre-tracking briefing session.
On the day of your gorilla trek, ensure early arrival at the designated meeting point. Present your gorilla permit along with a valid form of identification, typically your passport, before commencing the trek.
How long does a gorilla trekking tour last?
The duration of a gorilla trekking session can vary significantly, ranging from as short as 30 minutes to potentially lasting up to 7 hours. This duration is contingent upon factors such as the location of the gorilla family being tracked and their movement patterns.
In addition to the variability in tracking time, it’s essential to take into account the prevailing weather conditions and the specific section of the park being explored.
The terrain can differ significantly, from the central areas of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park to the southern regions or within Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, each presenting its challenges and scenic vistas.
Once the gorilla family is located, visitors typically spend approximately one hour in their presence, observing their behavior and capturing photographs.
