Travel times in Uganda during COVID -19 Pandemic
Travel times in Uganda have changed due to the COVID 19 pandemic. It is important to take note that airlines have been directed not to allow passengers without a negative COVID 19 test certificate to travel. Upon arrival and departure at Entebbe airport, a negative COVID-19 test certificate done within 72 hours from the time of sample collection is expected at entry into Uganda. Those without a valid test result will be denied entry. Passengers must carry along an official printed test certificate for easy verification process. You may have the digital certificate as a back up plan though this may not be accepted.
All arriving passengers into and out of Uganda will be subjected to temperature checks and screened for infectious diseases by the health authorities. Travellers are required to have a negative PCR COVID -19 test OR Rapid antigen test certificate and abide by the travel requirements of the particular destination countries.
Below are the categories of travelers based on the Standard Operating Procedures within Uganda.
Category 1 countries: India
Category 2 countries : USA, UK, UAE, Turkey, South Africa, Ethiopia, South Sudan and Tanzania.
Category 3 countries: All countries not in Categories 1 and 2. These will not be subjected to PCR COVID 19 tests on arrival.
Passengers from Category 2 will be subjected to another PCR COVID -19 test on arrival in Uganda irrespective of their negative PCR COVID test certificate at the traveller’s own cost (US$65 ). Results will be provided within 4 hours after samples are taken.
All passengers from category 2 countries who are fully vaccinated will out any symptoms will be exempted from the PCR COVID tests upon arrival.
If a passenger shows any signs of any infectious disease, they will be taken to a designated place of isolation and undergo a PCR COVID -19 test at their own cost. The test results are returned within 4 hrs to 24 hours and during this time, passengers are expected to remain at the isolation centers or check into a designated hotel at their own cost until tests are returned. The test results may be via email, or a PDF sent via whats App or a physical copy. Anyone who tests positive will be taken to a Ministry of Health-designated COVID-19 isolation facility, at the travelers expense.
Travellers departing Entebbe International Airport are required to have a negative PCR COVID -19 test certificate valid within 72 hours before departure and they must abide by the travel requirements of the destination country.
Currently Uganda is experiencing a surge in COVID -19 cases especially within Kampala which is why a curfew time of 21:00hrs to 05:30hrs has been imposed. However for travellers with a valid flight ticket and boarding pass, access to their destination places is granted depending on their flight details though they still get to pass through police checkpoints.
