Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is part of the Gorilla Highland Regions of Uganda and the smallest park covering 33.7km².
The park is at an altitude of between 2227m and 4127m and its home to not only the Mountain Gorilla but also the Golden Monkey- the place where Gold meets Silver! Nyakagezi is the habituated gorilla family comprises of 9 individuals amongst which are 5 silverbacks.
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park derives its name from ‘Gahinga’ a Kinyarwanda word for a pile of volcanic lava stone heaps around which cultivation is done. It protects the Ugandan part of the Virunga Mountains and its 3 main peaks.
Mt. Muhavura (4127m) -means guide and has a small crater lake about 36m wide at its summit.
Mt. Gahinga (3475m)- means pile of volcanic lave stone and has a swamp filled crater about 180m wide
Mt. Sabinyo (3645m) means old man’s teeth and is eroded with deep gorges offering some of the most memorable scenic viewing experiences.
Furthermore, the park has 39 mammal species recorded, 115 bird species recorded, 14 of which are endemic to the Albertine Rift Region.
