Currency
As of July 2022, the official currency of Kenya is the Kenyan Shilling (KES), with an exchange rate of 1 USD = 120 KES. In Rwanda, the local currency is the Rwandan Franc (RWF), with 1 USD = 1033 RWF. If you plan to exchange U.S. dollars for local currency, ensure that your bills
are in pristine condition—crisp, clean, and free of any marks, rips, or writing, as damaged notes may not be accepted.
Major credit cards are widely accepted at hotels, select restaurants, and larger stores. However, carrying small denominations of U.S. dollars is highly recommended for minor expenses such as snacks, tips, and small purchases. Both Kenya and Rwanda recognize the U.S. dollar, making it a convenient option for travelers.
Health & Vaccinations
For the latest health and vaccination recommendations, we advise checking with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Please note that we are not medical professionals and cannot provide health advice, prescribe vaccinations, or recommend medications. We strongly encourage consulting your personal physician or a travel health specialist to discuss any necessary vaccinations or medications based on your medical history and itinerary.
At present, Yellow Fever vaccination is required, and the CDC recommends staying up to date with routine immunizations, including:
Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR)
Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Pertussis (DTP)
Polio Vaccine
A pre-trip medical and dental check-up is always a good idea before traveling.
Weather & Climate
Kenya and Rwanda, both located near the Equator, experience warm daytime temperatures ranging between 80°F and 90°F. However, due to
the higher altitudes (5,000 to 9,000 feet), mornings and evenings can be cool, and nights may feel chilly. Sun protection is crucial, as the high
altitude amplifies UV exposure, making sunburn more likely. Be mindful of the midday sun and stay hydrated.
Kenya’s Climate:
The Rift Valley region enjoys a pleasant climate with temperatures ranging from 50°F (low) to 80°F (high).
Kenya has two rainy seasons:
Long rains: Late March to early June
Short rains: October to late November
Rwanda’s Climate:
Rwanda experiences two primary seasons:
Dry season: June to September
Wet season: Mid-February to June (heavy rains) and mid-September to mid-December (lighter rains).
Rain showers can occur at any time due to the country's high altitude, but they are typically short-lived, with sunny mornings followed by occasional afternoon showers.
While both countries offer predominantly sunny and pleasant conditions, it's always good to be prepared for sudden changes in weather, especially during the rainy seasons.
