Gorilla Trekking in Uganda & Rwanda

Few wildlife encounters compare to the thrill of standing quietly in the misty rainforest as a family of mountain gorillas moves gracefully through the foliage. Sharing 98% of our DNA, these gentle giants inhabit the lush jungles of Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, offering one of the most powerful wildlife experiences on earth. Whether you’re heading to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda, or the bamboo slopes of Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, this guide covers everything you need to know, from what to expect on your trek to preparation tips, permit costs, and ethical considerations.

Where to Go Gorilla Trekking

Uganda: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Rwanda: Volcanoes National Park

What to Expect on a Gorilla Trek

Your gorilla trekking adventure begins early in the morning at the park headquarters with a detailed briefing on safety, etiquette, and trekking routes. Rangers will check your temperature and ensure everyone is healthy since gorillas can catch human illnesses.

After the briefing, you’ll set off through dense forest or bamboo-covered hills in search of the gorillas. Depending on their location, treks can last from one to six hours.

  • In Uganda, expect thick jungle foliage and steeper terrain, especially in Bwindi.
  • In Rwanda, the terrain is gentler and offers sweeping views of the Virunga volcanoes.

Both experiences are unforgettable, blending adventure, nature, and intimate wildlife encounters.

When You Finally Meet the Gorillas

When your ranger guide /tracker locates a gorilla family, you’ll have up to one magical hour to observe them. Watch mothers nurturing their infants, juveniles tumbling in play, and silverbacks maintaining order, all within the peaceful rhythm of the forest. Keep a 7-meter distance, avoid flash photography, and follow your guide’s instructions closely.

Gorilla Trekking Permits and Costs

  • Uganda gorilla permit: USD 800 per person
  • Rwanda gorilla permit: USD 1,500 per person

While the cost may seem high, permit fees fund conservation programs, anti-poaching patrols, and community development, helping secure the future of these endangered primates.

Best Time for Gorilla Trekking

Uganda: June–September, December–February

Rwanda: December–February, June–September

What to Expect on a Chimpanzee Trekking Experience

Chimpanzee trekking in East Africa is an immersive forest adventure that offers rare access to one of the world’s most intelligent and emotionally expressive wildlife species. Your journey begins early in the morning at the park headquarters, where you meet your expert ranger guide. After a short briefing on safety, trekking etiquette, and chimpanzee behavior, you’ll venture into the dense rainforest in search of a habituated chimpanzee community.

The Trek Itself

Expect to hike through lush tropical forests, thick undergrowth, and occasionally hilly or uneven terrain. The walk can be slow and deliberate as guides listen for vocalizations, drumming on tree trunks, or fresh nests that indicate nearby chimp activity. Depending on their movements, the trek may take 1–5 hours, with the duration influenced by weather, terrain, and how far the chimpanzees have traveled that day.

Wild Chimpanzee Encounters

Once the chimpanzees are located, the experience becomes truly magical. You will observe:

  • Complex Social Interactions from grooming and bonding to territorial displays.
  • Feeding Behavior foraging for fruits, leaves, insects, and occasionally small mammals.
  • Playful Antics, especially among young chimps swinging through the canopy.
  • Vocal Communication hoots, pant-grunts, screams, and drumming that echo through the forest.
  • Tool Use, in some areas, chimps use sticks to extract insects or stones to crack nuts.

You will spend up to one hour with the chimpanzees (or longer during habituation experiences), giving you ample time to take photos, observe behavior, and enjoy this intimate window into their world.

Professional, Experienced Guides

Your guides are highly trained in primate behavior and forest tracking. They help interpret chimp signs, ensure safety, and enhance your understanding of these extraordinary animals. Many have been involved in habituation programs and research projects, giving them deep insights into chimpanzee families and dynamics.

MORE ABOUT THE Forest Experience

Beyond the chimps themselves, the trek offers rich encounters with:

  • Colorful forest birds
  • Black-and-white colobus, red-tailed monkeys, and other primates
  • Butterflies, unique vegetation, and towering ancient trees
  • Occasional forest mammals like duikers or bushbucks

This makes chimpanzee trekking an immersive nature experience, even before the chimps are found.

Best Time for Chimpanzee Trekking in East Africa

Chimpanzee trekking is offered year-round, but the dry seasons provide the best trekking conditions, clearer trails, and more predictable chimpanzee movements.

Uganda and Rwanda, Best Time to Trek

June to September (Peak Dry Season)

December to February (Short Dry Season)

These periods offer:

Drier, less slippery trails

Reduced forest undergrowth for clearer sightings

Higher success rates in Kibale, Budongo, Kyambura, Kalinzu, and Nyungwe

Chimpanzees in Uganda and Rwanda frequently vocalize and move in large groups during the dry months, making them easier to locate.

Tanzania, Best Time to Trek

June to September (Cool, Dry Season)

December to February (Warm, Clear Season)

In the Mahale Mountains and Rubondo Island, the dry months make trekking more comfortable and improve visibility as chimps spend more time feeding on the lower forest slopes. The combination of clear skies and beautiful lake scenery also enhances photography.
