Day 2: Kigali – Akagera National Park
On this day, travel from Kigali to Akagera National Park on a scenic 3-hour drive. Pass through lush hills and vibrant villages where the landscape shifts from rolling hills to open plains. Arrive at Akagera’s southern entrance, ready to explore its diverse ecosystems and wildlife, including the Big Five.
In the evening, you will have an evening game drive in the park. This diverse ecosystem is home to a rich variety of wildlife, including giraffes, hippos, buffaloes, zebras, crocodiles, and numerous bird species.

Day 3: Game Drive and Boat Ride on Lake Ihema – Akagera National Park
On this day, you will head out for a morning game drive that starts with a spectacular sunrise. Keep your eyes peeled for sightings of the Big Five, as well as antelopes, zebras, and giraffes against the backdrop of rolling savannahs and wooded hills.

Day 4: Walk The Line and Behind The Scenes Tour – Akagera National Park
After breakfast, head out on a 2-hour guided walk alongside one of Akagera’s fence attendants. Covering 7 km along the park’s 120-km perimeter, this trek offers insight into fence maintenance and conservation efforts. The walk ends atop a scenic ridge with breathtaking panoramic views.
After lunch, explore Akagera’s conservation efforts on a 2-hour Behind-the-Scenes Tour. Day 5: Akagera – Kigali – Volcanoes National Park
Today head back to Kigali, the drive from Akagera National Park to Kigali is about 2.5 to 3 hours. The route takes you through scenic landscapes, with rolling hills and rural villages, as you make your way back to Rwanda’s capital. Arrive in time for lunch and relaxation.
After lunch, enjoy a 3-hour drive to Volcanoes National Park. Passing through Musanze lively town blends modern amenities with traditional Rwandan charm. Amidst the forested slopes of the Virungas, forming a dramatic setting for the most poignant and memorable wildlife experience of a lifetime, gorilla trekking awaits you.
Situated in the far northwest of Rwanda, Volcanoes National Park protects the steep slopes of this magnificent mountain range and is home to the endangered mountain gorilla and a rich mosaic of montane ecosystems, which embrace evergreen and bamboo forest, open grassland, swamps, and heath.

Day 8: Musanze Caves Exploration and Relaxation
Your adventure begins at the Volcanoes National Park headquarters, where experienced guides provide a comprehensive safety briefing and equip you with necessary gear, including helmets and headlamps. Following a short drive, you’ll arrive at the Musanze Caves, for a fascinating journey into Rwanda’s geological history and cultural heritage.
Explore ancient lava tubes formed by volcanic activity over 65 million years ago, and marvel at the stunning stalactites and stalagmites. These intricate formations, created by the slow, natural process of mineral deposits, are a testament to nature’s artistry. Day 9: Volcanoes National Park- Kigali
Depart Volcanoes National Park after a relaxed breakfast and head back to Kigali arriving in time for lunch. After lunch, you will spend the day at leisure or have a city town visiting the Kimironko Market, the busiest market in town.
Vendors here sell produce from Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, while locals from all over the city head here to stock up on fruit, vegetables, fabric, clothing, shoes, and general household necessities. This is the place to experience Rwanda at its liveliest.

Day 5: Volcanoes Park – Gishwati-Mukura Park
Today you head to Gishwati-Mukura National Park which demonstrates how dedicated human efforts have reversed the damage caused by deforestation, flooding, subsistence hunting, overgrazing, soil erosion, illegal mining activities, and irresponsible farming.
President Paul Kagame established the Gishwati-Mukura National Park in February 2016, with the assistance of the American research institution Great Ape Trust, based in Des Moines, Iowa. The resilience of Rwandan nature has been proven once more in Gishwati-Mukura National Park.

Day 6: Chimpanzee Trekking and Birding
On this exciting day head out on an unforgettable chimpanzee and primate trekking adventure. As you explore this lush part of Rwanda, keep your eyes peeled for the rare and endangered eastern chimps, along with playful L’Hoest monkeys, striking black-and-white colobus monkeys, vibrant blue (diademed) monkeys, and the elusive golden monkeys. The forest is also home to other fascinating creatures, including the black-fronted duiker, agile serval, red river hog, and the charming southern tree hyrax.
After a delightful picnic lunch, venture into the breathtaking Gishwati-Mukura Reserve, a paradise for bird enthusiasts. With over 130 bird species, including 14 endemic to the Albertine Rift region, the reserve offers incredible birdwatching opportunities. After breakfast, head out for the captivating 3-hour canopy walk adventure. Traverse is a 160-meter-long and 70-meter-high canopy walkway that offers breathtaking views of the lush forest canopy. Delight in sightings of colorful butterflies and diverse bird species that thrive in the upper reaches of the forest. Day 9: Ndambarare Waterfall Hike – Lake Kivu
After breakfast, head out for a hike starting from a designated trailhead near Gisakura Reception Center. The 3-4 hour hike to Ndambarare Waterfall starts at 9 am and the trail passes through the tea estates and factory, lush and vibrant dense forest vegetation. As you hike, look out for the various primate species including the black and white colobus monkeys and L’hoest monkeys.
There are also bird species along the trail. After approximately 1-2 hours of hiking (depending on your pace and trail conditions), you’ll arrive at Ndambarare Waterfall. This majestic cascade, surrounded by pristine forest, plunges into a tranquil pool below, creating a mesmerizing scene. Later head back to the hotel for relaxation and check out, heading to Lake Kivu on a 1 -2 hour drive arriving in time for lunch and relaxation.

Day 10: Lake Kivu – Boat Cruise and Relaxation.
Start your day with a relaxed breakfast, and thereafter you’ll partake in a scenic boat ride to Nyamunini Island, also known as Napoleon Island for its resemblance to Napoleon’s hat. The island is home to a large colony of fruit bats, which you can encounter after a short, easy climb. You’ll also spot giant African millipedes, fish eagles, and a variety of water birds. After this experience, drive back to your hotel for some relaxation at the lodge and lunch.

Guided Kayaking: Enjoy kayaking on the calm waters of Lake Kivu under the guidance of a highly trained and experienced kayak leader. Spend a few hours, a full day, or even several days paddling through the clear blue waters, exploring countless inlets and bays.

Upon arrival in Kigali meet your guide and transfer to your accommodation for check-in and relaxation. Once settled, head to Nyarutarama Lake, located next to the Kigali Golf Course, where you’ll encounter an abundance of bird species in a serene setting.
Observe a variety of species, including Yellow-billed Duck, Squacco Heron, White-faced Whistling Duck, Hottentot Teal, Red-billed Teal, African Spoonbill, Spur-winged Geese, Little Grebe, Common Moorhen, Hadada Ibis, Black Crake, Black Egret, Cattle Egret, and Black-headed Heron, among others.
The surrounding vegetation provides an ideal habitat for Black Kite, African Fish Eagle, Pygmy Kingfisher, White-browed Coucal, Grey-capped Warbler, Winding Cisticola, Tawny-flanked Prinia, Paradise Flycatcher, African Hobby, and Swamp Flycatcher, to name a few.

Day 6: Birding in Nyungwe National Park
Nyungwe Forest National Park is home to around 300 bird species, with 27 of these being endemic to the Albertine Rift. The park features several excellent birding trails, including Bigugu, Gisakura, Karamba, and Kamiranozu.
Start your birding adventure on the 13 km Bigugu Trail, one of the best spots to observe the Red-collared Warbler. Day 4: Golden Monkey Hike and Dian Fossey Project

In Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park, two habituated troops reside, with the larger troop in the Sabyinyo volcano area boasting 80 to 100 members, making it a popular attraction for visitors.
Golden monkeys are relatively easy to locate as they dwell at the base of the volcanoes within lush bamboo forests. Trackers follow the trail of fresh bamboo shoots and leaves to pinpoint their exact location. Today, visit the Gorilla Guardian Village (formerly Iby’Iwacu) for cultural performances, including the iconic Intore dance, and explore the king’s palace. Experience a unique ceremony where you can briefly take on the king’s role, guided by local elders. You’ll also have the chance to learn Rwandan drumming, visit a traditional healer, or interact with the Batwa community.
Thereafter head back to Kigali arriving in time for lunch at the end of the Rwanda Gorilla and Golden Monkey Safari. Depending on the time of your international flight, you will be dropped at Kigali International Airport or make use of the day room for refreshments before departure

After lunch, depart for the twin lakes of Bulera & Ruhondo, nestled at the base of Mount Muhabura and near the Ugandan border. Surrounded by steep hills, tall waterfalls, and the stunning Virunga Volcanoes, these lakes offer breathtaking views. Return to the lodge for a relaxing evening to conclude the day on your 8-Day Rwanda Cultural Tour.

Day 5: Village Walk – Beekeeping and Local village market
After breakfast and with your packed lunch, we depart for a village walk. This is a walk through one of the villages in Musanze. The walks pass through the villages surrounding the volcanoes, offering views of the volcanoes – enjoy the mountainous vegetation in its natural state.
You will visit the local community of beekeepers, and learn more about the bee hives in swamps or forest areas rich in certain types of plants like banana trees or certain flowers.
Honey has medicinal properties and is added to local medicines by traditional doctors. The remaining honey is sold to local people and the benefits are shared with the other association. Take a tour to a local village market pharmacy and learn of the healing abilities of traditional medicine which has been used for ages by the Rwandan people.

Day 6: Transfer to Lake Kivu.
This morning will be spent relaxed and at leisure. Transfer to Lake Kivu by 11:00 am arriving in time for lunch. After lunch, take a boat ride to one of the islands in Lake Kivu OR explore the town, enjoying the hustle and bustle of the local market, or wander through the old colonial buildings.

Day 7: Lake Kivu – Kigali
This morning, spend some time at the private peninsular of Kivu Lodge, you may explore the private coffee plantation that surrounds the lodge and taste some coffee. Alternatively, you may visit the tea estates close to the lodge. Thereafter head back to Kigali arriving in time for relaxation and lunch.
Visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial Memorial which includes three permanent exhibitions, the largest of which documents the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. There is also a children’s memorial and an exhibition on the history of genocidal violence around the world.
The Education Centre, Gardens, and Genocide Archive of Rwanda form part of a meaningful tribute to those who perished and provide a powerful educational tool for visitors.
