Gombe Stream National Park

Gombe Stream National Park – Tanzania’s Legendary Chimpanzee Sanctuary

Nestled along the forested shores of Lake Tanganyika, Gombe Stream National Park is one of Africa’s most intimate and fascinating wildlife destinations. Though small in size, the park is globally renowned for its remarkable chimpanzee research initiated by Jane Goodall, making it one of the best places in the world to observe chimpanzees in their natural habitat.

The park hosts around 100 chimpanzees, with the famous Kasakela Chimpanzee Community being the most studied and frequently tracked group. Other chimpanzee communities include Kahama, Kalande, and Mitumba.

Beyond chimpanzees, the park is home to 35 mammal species and several primates such as blue monkeys, olive baboons, red colobus monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, and vervet monkeys. Wildlife sightings may also include bush pigs, small antelope, hippopotamus along the lake shores, snakes, and the elusive leopard.

For bird lovers, the park offers exceptional birding opportunities with over 250 recorded bird species, making it a rewarding destination for nature enthusiasts.
